As director of the Early Education Initiative, Ms. Guernsey focuses on how to scale up high-quality learning environments for young children, birth through age 8. In her research and writing – including editing the Early Ed Watch blog – she works to elevate dialogue about early childhood education and spotlight new approaches for narrowing the achievement gap. A journalist by training, Ms. Guernsey has been a technology and education writer at The New York Times and The Chronicle of Higher Education and has contributed articles about technology, education and social science to several national publications, including Newsweek, Time.com, Consumer Reports, Ladies Home Journal, The Washington Post, The Los Angeles Times, USA TODAY, The American Prospect, and others. She also blogs occasionally at The Huffington Post and is on Twitter @LisaGuernsey.
Ms. Guernsey’s most recent book is Screen Time: How Electronic Media – From Baby Videos to Educational Software – Affects Your Young Child (Basic Books, 2012). She was a 2005 journalism fellow in the child and family policy program at the University of Maryland, has served on several national advisory committees on early education, was a recent advisory board member of the Sandbox Summit, and holds a master's degree in English/American Studies and a bachelor's degree in English from the University of Virginia. A mother of two, Ms. Guernsey lives in Alexandria, Va.
