Department of Education officials say the direct lending program is better at preventing default and provides a higher level of customer service to students. On Tuesday, March 31, the New America Foundation's Education Policy Program hosted "The Future of Federal Student Loans." This event featured representatives from the Obama administration, the student loan community, and New America's Education Policy Program to discuss the pros and cons of the President's proposal to stop guaranteeing federal student loans and to instead make the loans directly.
Jennifer Cohen, who analyzes national school finance data for the D.C.-based New America Foundation, said the complicated formulas have led to some unfairness in distribution.
“The funding formulas are really flawed,” Cohen said. “In general, I’d like to see a formula that more effectively recognizes districts and schools that have the highest need.”
The New America Foundation, a research organization based in Washington, which has done extensive analysis of the stimulus allocations, first reported in February that the disparities among districts would be large. Original article
