New America OTI Director Makes Digital Power Index

Newsweek Digital Power Index Names Sascha Meinrath Among Top 100 Influencers
Published:   June 26, 2012

Sascha Meinrath, New America Foundation vice president and director of its Open Technology Institute, was named one of the Newsweek Digital Power Index’s Top 100 influencers.

Listed among other “public servants defining digital regulatory boundaries,” Newsweek highlighted Meinrath for leading the Open Technology Institute’s efforts to develop open-source, low-cost community wireless networks, particularly in underserved areas. Newsweek noted his role as “one of the more prominent Internet culture leaders” to fight against the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and PROTECT IP Act over the past year.

Meinrath said he is thrilled to be named on the Index, noting that the list also illustrates the need to recognize the thought leadership of women in the field.

“It is a great honor to be listed in the company of such a distinguished list of luminaries,” Meinrath said. “Equally important, however, is the follow-up discussion regarding the ‘invisible women’ that visionaries like Rachel Sklar and Xeni Jardin rightfully point out.”
Meinrath was recognized along with U.S Senator Ron Wyden, D-Ore., and Alec Ross, senior advisor to Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton. Others listed in the Index include Measurement Lab Co-Founder Vint Cerf, Former Advisor to President Obama Susan Crawford, Egyptian revolutionary, Alaa Abdel Fattah, and Linux Founder Linus Torvalds.
