I'm taking a writing class and a swimming class. The writing class is taught by a well-known non-fiction writer. All ten of my classmates are published authors; several are accomplished journalists. I've been writing for a long time, but have not taken a writing class since Mr. Frost taught me to diagram sentences in fourth grade.

Mission Insurance

January 26, 2011

The following idea came to me in an interview with Melinda Penkava of NPR. The story was taped this morning - I'll post a link when it goes on the air.

Here's an idea for a social entrepreneur - mission insurance. Now that we have social businesses, social enterprises, and nonprofits all producing social goods we need some way of making sure that the good gets done. Some type of insurance to keep the profit motive (even if its just break-even financial sustainability) from overwhelming the social mission.

From "e" to "o"

January 21, 2011

It just occurred to me. The last decade was defined by the prefix "e" - ePhilanthropy, eDiplomany, eCommerce, e e e.

The next decade will be similarly defined by the prefix "o" for Open - oGov, oData, oPhilanthropy...

Just you watch....

Philanthropy's 10 Favorite Buzzwords of the Decade Show How Nonprofits Are Changing

Buzzwords are fleeting things. They come in and go out, are first hot and then not. However, looked at over time, buzzwords also provide a useful rear-view roadmap of how we got here.

Taken together, the 10 phrases I have chosen to show the long steady rise in market-based solutions for social problem solving, technology’s infiltration of all things fund raising, and a shift in attention from local to global.

Following, in descending order of importance, are the 10 philanthropy buzzwords that define the decade.

Philanthropy Buzzword 2010.9 - Markets for Good

December 13, 2010

Last year Impact Investing topped the buzzword list. This year we've expanded from the changes in investing to the larger markets of which they are a part. The phrase "Markets for Good" got its biggest push at this year's SoCAP conference, but the idea has been around in various forms for some time.

Ah, December, time to reflect on the year gone by.

2010 was wonderfully productive on the writing front. Thanks to everyone who contributed to and used Disrupting Philanthropy, the breakout publication of the year. But it wasn't the only thing I wrote - here are several other publications from the last twelve months.

The real online revolution in giving

November 30, 2010

For all the talk of Web 2.0 (and even 3.0), philanthropy online has evolved fairly slowly since the dot com days. First we got big, red Donate Now buttons on every website. Then donation sites such as GlobalGiving came along to provide vetted projects and charitable options for donors. The next iteration came in the form of JustGiving and CrowdRise which let everyone be a fundraiser.

Philanthropy Buzzword 2010.7 - Giving Pledge & 2010.7a - Chuggers

Nothing says philanthropy in 2010 like "The Giving Pledge."

Well, except maybe the depressing reality that more Americans than ever before say they can't give to charity this year. Or that most of us will be doing our best to give the same amount we gave last year and many of us have no choice but to give less.

Crowdsourced Recruiting - Watch out Head Hunters

  • By

November 19, 2010

A few days ago I spoke with Caroline Preston of the Chronicle of Philanthropy about head hunters working with  Foundations and NonProfits. While this might seem rather “in the weeds,” recruiting and placing people in leadership positions at these organizations is a key to the success of the sector. Something about our discussion stuck with me, and I’ve been thinking about “how we find the people we need” ever since.

Citizens United and new rules for Nonprofits

November 8, 2010

The most important task for the social sector in the United States in 2011 will be to understand the effects of the Supreme Court’s decision in Citizens United vs. the FEC.

This decision removed prior restrictions on independent spending by corporations and unions on election campaigns. The immediate result of the January decision was to unleash a flood of money to advertising in support of or opposition toballot measures or candidates. Most of this money was channeled through certain types of nonprofits.
