Internet and telecommunications companies, along with mobile device and networking equipment manufacturers, exercise growing influence over the political and civil lives of citizens who depend on their platforms andservices. With corporations being rated on pretty much everything else - from conflict minerals to carbon disclosure to political spending disclosure - it is time to create a ratings system for ICT companies on free expression and privacy that would be useful to advocates and investors alike.
On Friday, October 19th from 3:00 - 5:00 p.m., New America Foundation Senior Fellow Rebecca MacKinnon will lead an invitation-only meeting with technologists, investors, and members of the human rights, free expression, and privacy communities for an early-stage brainstorm on the scope, criteria, and methodology of the project, tentatively dubbed the Netizen Index.
This undertaking will be complex and ambitious, requiring partners, staff, and funding. Before moving too far forward we must first do our homework to ensure that the project is as credible and effective as possible. We hope that with your expertise and experience, you can help us set out in the right direction.
Dial-in and Google Hangout will be set up for remote participation for those unable to attend in person.
