CA EVENT: The California Constitutional Convention Summit
New America in California
California, most of the state's citizens believe, is headed in the wrong direction. As California has lurched over the last two decades from budget crisis to policy gridlock, a growing number of Californians across the political spectrum have concluded that the state is simply ungovernable under its current constitutional system.
When the institutions established in the constitution no longer meet the state's needs, the fundamental premise of democratic government tells us that the people can change them. The state constitution itself gives us a variety of tools for repairing state government and making it more effective again––from individual constitutional amendments to citizens commissions for constitutional revision to a constitutional convention.
We invite you to join top leaders from around the state on February 24 to consider which of those tools, if any, offers California the best chance to fix its broken-down state government.
This event, organized by the Bay Area Council and co-sponsored by the New America Foundation, the Center for Governmental Studies, California Common Cause, the Courage Campaign, the League of Women Voters, and the William C. Velasquez Institute, offers an opportunity to review research, discuss process, and explore ideas about what fundamental reform in California should look like and how we, as Californians, can best make it happen.
It is time to repair our system of governance. Please join the conversation.
