IN THE STATES: San Francisco Slashing Health Services in Budget Crunch

March 5, 2008 - 4:36pm

This grim news from San Francisco sure grabbed our attention. The city has been a pioneer in making sure the poor get access to quality health care. But now it's cutting deep into the flesh and bones of public health services for the vulnerable. On the chopping block are nurses visits to homebound patients, mental health services, even operating rooms at San Francisco General Hospital.

Public health has to cut $28.1 million to help the city bridge a $251 million budget gap. "Our need to make these cuts is real," said Gregg Sass, chief financial officer of the department. "If we didn't think these programs had value, we wouldn't be doing them in the first place."
