Judge: Initiative Donors Must Be Disclosed

January 30, 2009 - 11:51am

A federal judge has ruled that the names of Prop 8 donors have to be disclosed, turning aside a legal challenge that argued that disclosing the donors would subject them to harassment.

Two things

This isn't really related, but there are two things I thought you might want to know about:

1.  Freshman Congressman Jared Polis (D-Colorado) is going to introduce a bill into Congress this year for national ballot initiatives.  I wrote about it here (cross-posted at OpEdNews, operationitch.com, and mydd.com):  http://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/12/10/22135/432/1010/671221

2.  Do you ever read the articles posted at www.ni4d.us?  There were a few good ones recently.  The most significant one is an interview with Illinois's new governor who got started in politics by advocating for initiatives and they have played an important role in his career beyond that.  He thinks they're an important part of government, apparently.

Thanks

Good tips both. I do read the National Initiative for Democracy web site, but I was unaware of Pat Quinn's background. Thanks again. Will pursue it. Joe Mathews Irvine senior fellow, New America Foundation www.newamerica.net/blog/blockbuster-democracy/
