The End of Eymanism?

November 7, 2009 - 4:27pm

The Seattle PI web site makes that argument, after another defeat for Washington state's leading initiative sponsor, Tim Eyman, last week.

Eyman will survive.

Not Hardly. What Eyman and the rest of the Tea Party movement must do is fund raise. Eyman has seen that massive amounts of public employee union money can do in the best of intentions. Similar to massive amounts of corporate money has done the same to Ralph Nader sponsored initiatives. Eyman and TABOR 2 in Maine ran up against the buzz saw of public employee union money. A better strategy would make sure the bankroll is there before you start the fight. Usually early polls will give the initiatives the large edge. However, the demonizing by the public employee unions never ends with its commercials. It makes John and Ken even more powerful. Their voice was a reason the special election got defeated. Too bad Eyman doesn't have a John and Ken to give him amplitude.

Tim Eyman's anti-governnment, ant tax initiative harangues

Tim Eyman is what many would call a demagogue. He tries to stir up anti-government, anti-tax sentiment based on emotions, fears and lies. He's been at it for many years and has fooled a lot of people. But as time goes on, more and more realize he is not trying to solve real problems. He creates the illusion that problems exist so he can stay in power as a celebrity of sorts. He does it by putting down elected officials as greedy folks that are like kids in a toyRus store that have no restraints on taxes.

The exact opposite has happened in this recession where the Legislature cut services drastically and no taxes were raised. Yet rather than acknowledging this Eyman said they were intent on raising taxes and that we were the 8th highest taxed state in the country going for number 1.

It didn't matter to Tim that this was a false statement. The conservative Tax Foundation noted that Washington State ranked in the bottom third in terms of state and local tax burden. It ranked 35th lowest (with 1 being the highest).

More and more folks are sensing these lies by Eyman, that are contradicted by facts. Polling showed that associating Eyman's name with his latest initiative caused it to lose support.

Of course as long as someone like Eyman associate Michael Dunmire is willing to donate hundereds of thousands of dollar to buy signatures to get an initiative on the ballot Eyman can continue. He so far has not been able to raise much money from the public to support his measures.

In this sense his measures are propoed up with special interest money by a few individuals. A $25,000 contribution by Kemper Freeman of Bellevue Square Shopping Mall would have yielded him a $1.7 million windfall in reduced property taxes.

The public saw his latest measure as a wealth transfer scheme that transfered tax dollars from those less well off to those with lots of property. If you write initiative to benefit special interests as Eyman has been doing, sooner or later the public catches on. Any future efforts will be harder for him because of his increased lack of credibility.
